Halloween in most places means a few carved pumpkins on doorsteps and kids doing the rounds for sweets. These places take it a lot further, and a couple of them are close enough for a genuine weekend trip from the UK.

Derry, Northern Ireland

This isn't an exaggeration for content's sake, Derry genuinely runs one of the biggest Halloween festivals anywhere in the world. Think a full carnival parade through the city, a huge fireworks display over the River Foyle, and the whole city centre dressed for it. There are daytime events aimed squarely at families as well as the bigger evening spectacle, so it works whether you're bringing kids or not. Easy to reach too, a short flight or a drive up from the rest of the UK.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh has an actual claim to Halloween history, the festival has roots in the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain, and the city leans into it hard. The Samhuinn Fire Festival is the headline event, a torchlit procession through the Old Town that's as much theatre as festival. Pair it with one of the underground vault tours during the day if you want a proper build-up.

Bran Castle, Transylvania

The castle most associated with Dracula runs its own Halloween events, including a costume ball actually held inside the castle. Even without the Halloween-specific events, visiting in late October means you get the atmosphere for free, mist over the Carpathians, the castle lit up against the hillside. Worth booking the specific event tickets well ahead, they sell out.

For families who'd rather skip the scares

If the above sounds a bit much for younger kids, Efteling in the Netherlands does Halloween properly without leaning into horror. It's a fairytale-themed park with autumn decorations, pumpkin displays, and family-friendly evening events, alongside the option of spookier attractions for older kids and adults who want more of an edge. A good middle ground if the group has a real range of ages.

A practical note

31 October falls on a fixed date every year, which means demand clusters hard around that one weekend. Flights and accommodation for any of these get booked up and pricier the closer you get to the date, so it's worth deciding now rather than waiting until mid-October.
