October half term with a toddler rules out most of the obvious options. Long haul is a no go once you factor in the time difference and the flight length, and anywhere with a lot of walking between sights turns into a fight over the buggy by day two. So here's a short list picked around three things that actually matter when you're travelling with a toddler: flight time under three hours, decent weather in October, and somewhere you can slow down without running out of things to do.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

It's about four hours flying, a bit more than we'd normally go for, but the payoff is worth it. You're still getting 24 to 26 degree days into November, and the beaches slope gently enough that toddlers can actually paddle without you panicking. Corralejo has plenty of short, flat streets that are easy with a pram, plus enough restaurants doing early dinner sittings that you're not eating at 9pm with an overtired kid.

Costa del Sol, Spain

Under three hours from most UK airports. Nerja in particular has a walkable old town, calm water at the beach, and enough indoor options for the odd overcast day. It's a well worn choice, but that's honestly because it just works.

Algarve, Portugal

Similar flight time to the Costa del Sol and usually a bit quieter in October. Towns like Tavira have flat, pedestrianised centres that are much easier going with a buggy than the cobbled hill towns further along the coast.

What to actually check before booking

  • Flight departure time. Anything before 8am with a toddler basically writes off a whole extra day before you've even landed
  • Whether the place actually has a proper cot, not a travel one they mention in an email after you've booked
  • How far it is from the nearest supermarket, not just the beach

Run the actual numbers before you commit to anything. Half term prices move fast, and going a week either side of it is sometimes the difference between a relaxed trip and a stretched budget.
